Why Chrome OS will not be a hit

TechWhen Google came up with the proposition about their cloud OS, it created a lot of waves. As the days have gone by though, I am getting convinced that it will meet the same result as Google Wave did. The idea was bold. It was unlike any before. But then, what is really good about a cloud OS?

True it will be a minimal OS, which will not be resource heavy. But then, technology has evolved a lot since the early days of the computers, and prices are perpetually falling. My dad tells me that the first computer he used had a hard drive of 4 MB, and he would input data using punch cards. We have left those times far behind.

A major disadvantage of the cloud OS idea is that you need the Internet to use it.  It is a huge drawback. Probably the biggest one..It will certainly take out the idea from my mind about using a cloud OS. The advantages may be nullified by the fact that normal computers can use Cloud services too. I would rather have the best of both worlds.

As for the mobile devices, there already exists Android, and Meego, being developed by Nokia has the potential to be a huge success. It is like what Steve Jobs said about Netbooks: They are useless!

A lot of people will also not be comfortable with the fact that all their data will be stored in some arbitrary server in the anywhere on the planet. All in all, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages heavily. It will not be one of the Google products I personally will be looking forward to.

Post Post: A better interface for Facebook

TechI spend a lot of time on Facebook. You probably spend a lot of time on it too. There are times when you probably feel that you are spending too much time on it.

So the other day I found this web app called PostPost. What it does is that it brings together all the content on your Facebook profile and puts it together in a newspaper like format. The interface pleased me a real lot. You can cover almost everything on your profile in no time at all. PostPost is ideal when you just want to browse through Facebook, comment on stuff and the like. I will not recommend it for people who use Facebook for its applications and games though.

Ubuntu Netbook: A distraction free no-nonsense minimalist OS

TechI have been a Windows guy for a lot of time now. I had been running MS DOS from the days I had a Green and Black monochrome monitor, and Windows 95 was a big change at the time it came out. As the years have gone by, I have continued upgrading my Windows versions.. Windows 7 is the only one I haven’t run on my machine yet. I had never really liked the Linux OSes over time. Yet sometimes when you have a slow laptop that heats up like crazy, you have to look around..

So I got my hands on Ubuntu Netbook. It was perfect for my machine as an alternate OS. Very fast, you can surf the Internet and view documents from it; Also helpful when you want to clean up Windows Virus infested Pen Drives. If installed within Windows, I can tinker with files on my Windows file system. My laptop does not heat up too much on it too(On Vista, you can make omlettes by cracking eggs on the back of my laptop) .It has a clean, minimalist look too. It reminded me a lot about the barebones Windows XP version.I feel that Ubuntu Netbook is the perfect alternate OS for people with older computers.

You can download Ubuntu Netbook here

Appetizer: A concept launcher for windows

TechAppetizer is unlike a lot of other windows launchers. It has some really good features like multi-launch,  which enables one to launch multiple windows in one click. The theme is compact and sleek. A mouse over pop-up is notably missing, but one can always use the hot-key or click on the taskbar button. The icons can be moved around, and the launcher can be re-sized easily. It has plug-in support also. It also imports all start menu items automatically, which is a real help
